چکیده

Sediments have long been recognised as a source of contaminants in marine environments and, as a result, interim sediment quality guidelines were included in the ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) water quality guidelines. While toxicity tests with benthic temperate species have been developed and incorporated into marine sediment toxicity assessments over the past 10 years, there has been limited test development with benthic tropical species. This paper reviews the current status of whole sediment toxicity tests in Australia for tropical and temperate marine ecosystems and highlights (i) the lack of whole sediment toxicity tests available for generating sediment toxicity data for tropical ecosystems, (ii) the lack of chronic whole sediment tests and sensitivity data for temperate or tropical benthic species, and (iii) important factors to consider when selecting relevant tropical test species for toxicity test development. Further development of whole sediment tests should focus on ecologically relevant species, chronic endpoints and the use of appropriate sediment spiking procedures to determine test sensitivity to contaminants. These tests will provide an additional line of evidence for use in sediment assessments and enable the derivation of improved cause-effect based sediment quality guidelines for both tropical and temperate ecosystems.

Development of a whole-sediment toxicity test using a benthic marine microalga.

An acute whole-sediment toxicity test with a benthic marine microalga was developed and optimized using flow cytometry to distinguish algae (based on their chlorophyll a autofluorescence) from sediment particles. Of seven benthic marine algae screened, the diatom Entomoneis cf punctulata was most suitable because of its tolerance of a wide range of water and sediment physicochemical parameters,...

Residual archives on organochlorine insecticides in the core sediment of a tropical estuary, India

A comprehensive evaluation of the residual levels of Organochlorine insecticides (OCIs) in the sediment cores of Cochin Estuarine System (CES) is highlighted in this research article. It assessed the distribution pattern and impact of these xenobiotics in this environmental niche. Fifteen persistent organochlorine compounds (OCs) were quantitatively analysed in the six sediment core samples col...

Arsenic in marine sediments from French Mediterranean ports: geochemical partitioning, bioavailability and ecotoxicology.

This work investigates arsenic mobility, bioavailability and toxicity in marine port sediments using chemical sequential extraction and laboratory toxicity tests. Sediment samples were collected from two different Mediterranean ports, one highly polluted with arsenic and other inorganic and organic pollutants (Estaque port (EST)), and the other one, less polluted, with a low arsenic content (Sa...
